Creeping Bellflower (Campanula rapunculoides) has arrived in our yard. Which is not surprising since down the street the plant is being encouraged in a flower bed. Hopefully they will not cause too much trouble. Thankfully it was around the lilac tree in the lawn and not the flower bed.
Note to fellow gardeners: please pull out this notourious weed and don't be tempted by NEW and exciting exotic flowers that are the potential next invasive weed for us to deal with. Focus on native or near-native species where possible.
More info:
City of Edmoton is handing out warning letters this year. Failure to pull this weed is a fine of up to $5000. Now that I'm aware of it, I see it everywhere.
ReplyDeleteCreeping Bellflower is pretty much everywhere in Edmonton, including on City property and all over the UA campus. So, if they are handing out tickets, they'd better ticket themselves and the University.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure I agree that this weed should be on the list (I can't say that I've ever seen it in the bush outside of the River Parkland), but I've been fighting it for a couple of years. It is pretty hard to get rid of in a garden because it spreads by rhizomes and seeds prolifically. Once it is among your other plants, you are stuck with it.
